“I matched! At a program of my choice, close to home!” When I joined the course, I was in the final year of my med school, recently immigrated to the US, dealing with post-COVID rotation cancellations, and was pretty unhappy with the time I had taken to get done with my Step 1. Usually a confident go-getter, I found myself afraid/embarrassed to even submit a Sub-I application at a hometown program, believing I wouldn’t match in California anyway (spoiler: I did).
